I live in Ketchikan, Alaska, a small island community located in Southeast Alaska along the famed Inside Passage. The intertidal zone of the area beaches is noteworthy due to large fluctuations in the sea level between daily high and low tides. This zone teams with life adapted to tide-driven cyclic immersion and exposure. It is a rich ecosystem comprised of animals and plants, living, dying, dead and decaying, all adding color and texture to the scene. Looking betwixt and between the tides, I discover a continuously changing phantasmagoria, an “imaginarium” populated with creatures of all sorts, real and imagined. My fascination with the intertidal zone provided the motivation for this book.
